Site Visit Project Description

Site visits
"We learn to see a thing by learning to describe it."
-Raymond Williams

Objectives
Build upon your embodied knowledge of buildings and spaces.
Give you tools and procedure that enable you to engage architecture and urban space.
Introduce you to the notion that buildings and spaces can be looked at through multiple lenses.
Introduce you to a range of interpretive frameworks.
Introduce you to various representation strategies for observation, documentation, and analysis.

Procedures
Spend two-to-three hours at a site observing, documenting, photographing, taking notes.
Revisit site after a review of material collected and class discussion for further documentation.
Prepare report on site visit summary and analysis.
On-site observations to be done individually.
Site visit summary and analysis report to be prepared in groups.
Site visit summaries to be posted on the coweb.

On-site method
Like detectives at the scene of a crime, we will observe, document, analyze, and speculate upon the clues we find at each site. We will engage repeatedly the material evidence in a series of passes, or takes, that focus on a particular issue or ask a particular question. Each pass or take will be followed by short on-site discussion. In this manner, we will attempt to describe as fully as possible the urban space or architectural work we are studying.
