Marc Penka Poetry Award: $500 First Prize To Be Awarded in June 2005

An important new annual poetry contest has been established by the family and friends of Marc Penka, a radically original American poet who died in October 2000 at age 44. The Marc Penka Poetry Award, with a First Prize of US $500, aims to promote poets whose work exemplifies the same uncompromising spirit and approach to truth-seeking that characterizes Mr. Penka's own poetry. The competition is open to poets of any age writing in English.

The First Prize will be granted to an author based on a body of representative work. In addition to the $500 cash award, the winning work will be announced via press releases and displayed at www.marcpenka.com for a year. The Award is an initiative of the Marc Penka Poetry Awards Foundation, whose principal aim is not only the diffusion of Marc Penka's work in both prose and poetry, but also the promotion of poets, whether young or established, whose writing reflects to some degree the linguistic rigor, humor and incisive vision typical of Marc Penka's literary contributions.

Entries must be submitted online and posted directly to the Award's official website at www.marcpenka.com. For eligibility, length and submission guidelines, please consult the "Poetry Award" link on the home page at www.marcpenka.com.

The entry deadline is May 1, 2005.

Judges will be chosen by invitation each year. Winners, including an optional runner-up at the judges' discretion, will be announced on June 7, 2005. There will be a nominal $5 administration fee for each entry, and all submissions will be acknowledged.
